The Richard W. Withington Award was established by Mr. Withington in 1981, and is presented annually to honor an employee of the Hillsboro-Deering School District who is recognized as an ambassador from the schools to the larger community, and who has achieved excellence in their work, contributed significantly to the general welfare of students in ways above and beyond the normal requirements of their job, offering students and adults alike a model of strong professional behavior.

This year’s Withington Award recipient has been a vital part of Hillsboro-Deering High School since she joined the staff as a paraeducator in 2009. This educator works diligently to enhance and enrich the lives of her students, preparing them to be members of the larger community as they transition to life after high school. She encourages her students to participate in all aspects of the high school community, often giving much of her own time and resources to to provide those opportunities. Her commitment to student success does not end at the daily school dismissal or even graduation, she remains connected with her students and their families.

Beyond the Hillsboro-Deering School District, this year’s recipient is also a well recognized and respected member of the larger community. She joined the Hillsboro Fire Department Rescue Squad as an Emergency Medical Technician in 1995. She frequently goes from her work at Hillsboro-Deering High School to spend the night serving the community as a first responder. To quote one of her colleagues, this educator “is a quiet pillar of strength with a calming influence on everyone around her.” This year’s recipient is a true role model of all of the traits Mr. Withington created this award to honor.

Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School will accept applications for the Preschool lottery for the 2025-2026 school year. Registration packets can be picked up at the Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School Main Office on Monday, March 31, 2025 through Friday, April 11, 2025 between 8am and 4pm.

Children who reside in the towns of Hillsboro, Deering or Windsor and who will be three or four years of age on or before September 30, 2025 are eligible for the preschool lottery. Preschool placement will be announced by the end of June and any additional openings will be filled using a waitlist process.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025 there will be a Preschool Parent Information Night at 5:00 pm at HDES. A typical preschool day will be discussed, followed by a question and answer period. On Wednesday, May 21, 2025 there will be a Kindergarten Parent Information Night at 5:30 p.m. Please bring your completed registration packet. An overview of a typical kindergarten day will be presented to parents, followed by a question and answer period.  Kindergarten screenings will also be scheduled at this time. We understand how unsettling it can be to parents to send their child off to school for the first time.  We hope this information session will help parents feel more secure about the wonderful experience that awaits their child at Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School.
